Politricks: Deciphering a Political Campaign

Filipinos have always been told that their vote counts. Filipinos have also always been reminded to vote wisely. Across various forms of media and between opposing political parties, these calls never fail to make headway once elections draw near.

Every candidate will try to convince us that they are the wisest choice. In so doing, their political campaigns become marketing stunts to paint them in the best possible light.

𝗣𝗼𝗹𝗶𝗧𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗸𝘀: 𝗗𝗲𝗰𝗶𝗽𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮 𝗣𝗼𝗹𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗖𝗮𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗶𝗴𝗻 aims to delve into this phenomenon. It will have two main topics, namely: (1) Voting Behaviors of Filipinos and (2) How Political Machines Work.

For so long now, the Filipino has been promised a brighter future every election season. The reality, however, of a system which favors the powerful at the expense of the powerless still persists. We are often left hanging, only to again be promised upon come next election.

Understanding the intricacies behind political campaigns would make us more cautious when casting our votes. Voting wisely entails educating ourselves on the politician and the issues they come forward with. More importantly, it requires us to competently judge politicians behind their promises and the image they are trying to project.

𝗩𝗼𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗕𝗲𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗶𝗼𝗿𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗙𝗶𝗹𝗶𝗽𝗶𝗻𝗼𝘀

Much like how marketing campaigns carefully study their target audience, political campaigns also do so with their target base. Some of the factors we consider when voting may be constant and some may vary depending on the political situation. Understanding our voter psyche is vital in order to critically discern the intricacies of a political campaign.

𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝗣𝗼𝗹𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗠𝗮𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗸

From vote-buying to troll farms, political machines have become more and more innovative. While the boom of technology has made educating ourselves easier, it has also made us vulnerable to false and misleading information. Both the Left and the Right would try to present information that would benefit them. It is up to us to objectively analyze what they are peddling. Aside from that, we should understand how these political machines use our voting behaviors in order to get us to vote for a candidate.
